Sketches

I have kept countless sketchbooks over the years-  recording moments, catching glimpses of peoples’ lives, trying to capture something of character; the way the person sits, moves, the expression, the mood-  something which happens for a brief moment and then is gone forever. Part of the excitement is drawing fast, checking the event for the most economical lines, getting them down before the subject changes position or walks away.

I drew this old chap sitting on a bench in a Bucharest park. The moment I started, I somehow knew I only had moments before he stood up and left the park so I had to work fast.

The people eating in a Romanian restaurant- there is something animalistic about eating and yet very human and private.
